Ignacio Jose Fernandez Morales is a Cuban-American artist who has studied and practiced architecture along with following his passion for art. In an effort to maintain his Latino roots he traveled for three years through Latin America where he recorded his travel experiences in journal and plein aire watercolors.
In 1996 he produced the series Ex Cuba Libris about his native Cuba. Using coffee, tobacco, and sugar as a collage base material, he applied pigment, photos, and found objects in order to explore the politics and icons of Cuba. One of the pieces is currently in the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) in Long Beach, California. He collaborated with John Labovitz and Michael Smith on a publication of this work, available from Lulu.
On plein aire he states, “I paint outdoors to satisfy a curiosity to understand by observation what inspires me in nature.” About Cuba he states, “Although I’ve lived in the USA almost 50 years, I am obsessed with Cuba and I love it dearly.”
